Today's meeting featured several team reports and a presentation about our vision screening work in the area schools.
Community Service Projects:
Sandbagging for Fargo - Lion Mark Jenson suggested that the Fargo Lions should get together after work either the week of March 1 or March 8, 2010 to fill sand bags at Sand Bag Central. Many Lions signed up with interest. Mark will schedule the time and get back to those interested in the event.
St. Patrick's Parade - Lion Larry Zich updated the club on the parade marshalling project. Lions will meet at the corner near Old Broadway to get their yellow vests and instructions. We plan to meet at 3:00 pm Saturday, March 13, 2010. The DCP also indicated they may need help setting up barricades before the parade. Larry will get more information from them this week.
For Your Eyes Only - This fundraising event was a big success for the club in February. Lion President Paula Klien reported that the club received an additional $200 contribution this week from Mark jackson which will go towards the Lions Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.
Presentation:
Dana is a nurse at Jefferson and Madison Elementary schools in Fargo, ND. Over the past few years, Lion Jane Pettinger has coordinated volunteers from Fargo Lions to provide basic vision screening for students at these schools. Dana told the club of the importance of our work at these schools in particular because of the high number of children with langauage barriers and special needs. Due to demographics of the areas, these schools also lack the support of a strong parent organization. Dana thanked the club for the valuable service we have provided to these students who may not have other opportunities to have their eye sight checked. This project is at the heart of the Lions Clubs mission, to assist those with vision problems.
